Mining Studies

The mining heritage of South Wales particulary has left certain areas with long term potential hazards.  Quantum Geotechnical, with it's history of being formed from a mining company, has a wealth of experience in investigating, assessing and remediating site hazards due to mining problems.

Mining hazards commonly fall in to two distinct elements: Mine Shafts or Adits; and Shallow Mineworkings.

Such potential hazards can be identified by initial Desk Study searches of historical and archive data. This is followed up if required by investigation of the presence of any features, by Topsoil Strip, Trenching or Rotary Probe Drilling or Rotary Coring.

Advice can be provided on any measures required to minimise any risk from shafts or adits, by design and implementation of a remedial plan. If shallow mineworkings are present, advice on appropriate foundation options, or design an implementation of stabilisation measures by drilling and grouting can be provided.

Quantum Geotechnical have huge experience of dealing with potential mining related problems and have built up a huge archive of Historical Map Data and Mine Abandonment Plans. We hold a complete set of plans for the Pembrokeshire Coalfield.

Liaison with the Coal Authority is vital in securing validation of any investigation and treatment of mining related hazards, and Quantum Geotechnical have built an excellent relationship with the Coal Authority over many years in solving Client's mining problems.
